The Seabird Protection Network is a multi-organization collaborative whose mission is to reduce human disturbance to seabirds and other marine wildlife along the California coastal.Currently, the Seabird Protection Network consists of five chapters, which extend from Humboldt County to Point Mugu, and includes the Channel Islands.Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary manages the founding Bodega Head – Point Sur Chapter, and facilitates program expansion. For groups who oversee similar projects and are interested in starting a chapter, we’ve put together a framework for collaboration.

Chapters
North Coast
This chapter is currently managed by the Bureau of Land Management’s Arcata Field Office. Citizen scientists monitor offshore rocks hosting colonies of nesting seabirds under the guidance of BLM project staff. This chapter is actively seeking volunteers in the Trinidad area.

Gualala Point – Bodega Head
This chapter is currently managed by the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods, and is entirely volunteer staffed. Dedicated citizen scientists conduct weekly monitoring of three offshore rocks between Jenner, CA and Bodega Bay, CA. Resident species include: Common Murres, Brandts, Double-crested and Pelagic Cormorants, Western Gulls, Pigeon Guillemots along with Black Oystercatchers. During the non-breeding season, volunteers conduct monthly counts of species on roosting rocks.

Bodega Head – Point Sur
The Bodega Head to Point Sur chapter is managed by Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. Our chapter conducts outreach about seabirds that breed along the coast from Bodega Head to Point Sur. Biologists with the US Fish and Wildlife Service monitor local colonies and direct our outreach to areas and sources of disturbance – planes, boats and coastal visitors. We actively seek to partner with these audiences, and schedule presentations across central and northern California. Point Sur – Point Mugu
This chapter is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Seabird S.A.F.E. outreach is presented at harbors and kayak launch sites, and events including the Morro Bay Harbor, Santa Barbara Harbor, and Morro Bay Winter Bird Festivals. Morro Coast Audubon Society conducts citizen science monitoring. Exhibits are available year-round at the Central Coast Aquarium, Morro Bay Museum of Natural History and the Coastal Discovery Center.
